Sooooooo – my first video for you.  :D  After I mentioned using this elastic in my Hippy Chick skirt, I got a few questions about how to use it.  I thought a video would be better than just more words!

I love the soft elastic for waistbands in kids clothing as well as my own!  You can find the elastic here. And if I’ve just managed to confuse you more (I’m good at confusing people) then leave a question for me. If you want to just tell me how beautiful I am with my glasses, you can do that too.

I have a couple more video clips to share with you…but don’t want to inundate you all at once with too much screen time.

  4. Thanks for the tutorial, very useful to know and you make it look so easy! I’ll be trying it on my skirts!
    Have a great week, Melanie.

  5. You did a fantastic job & you look great in your glasses :) Question: do you need to modify a pattern at all if you choose to use the soft elastic and the pattern calls for a casing?

    • @MelanieO: No need to modify anything per se. The only thing to be aware of is the size of elastic waistband the original pattern calls for. If it is 3/4 inch or 1 inch elastic, the length of your garment would end up being a little shorter using this because it is 1 1/4 inches, so you’d fold over more along the top. You could easily add a bit of length to the top to make it the same. Of course – I always sew it on a double layer….but I do imagine you would be able to do this on one thickness of fabric instead. I’ll test that out!

  6. Very helpful. Thanks.

  7. oh my gosh, you are so adorable, esp with the glasses! If I had as much poise in front of the camera, I’d make all of my tutorials a video. Thanks for sharing this tutorial. I’m excited by the prospect of never threading elastic through a casing again!

  8. Thank you for posting this I love coming across new ways of doing things especially sewing. :) I will be doing this for my next project.

  9. You are as cute as can be, Melanie!

  10. i’ve seriously been wanting to do this for a skirt! perfect :) do you recommend doubling the waist measurement for the fabric?

    also, you’re CUTE!

  11. great job, Melanie! I’m proud of you!

  12. So cool that you are doing videos! Way to go!

  13. Thanks for the tutorial. I knew the elastic stretched when sewn. You have given us the amount to
shorten the elastic for a perfect finished waist and taken away the guess work. What a valuable tip!

    • I’m so glad it helped! I find 4 inches is good for my kids, but some might prefer even a little tighter fit. Definitely experiment if you need to!
